The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children® – Fourth Edition (Pakistan) (WISC-IVPAK) builds on contemporary approaches in cognitive psychology and intellectual assessment, to give you a culturally appropriate and relevant tool to support your clinical judgment and guide your intervention.
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children is a gold standard used globally for assessing children’s intellectual ability. We are pleased to bring out the WISC-IV with Pakistan norms. Use WISC-IVPAK to obtain a valid and comprehensive profile of a child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, in the Pakistan context, in order to ensure appropriate and effective intervention.
WISC-IVPAK is the first assessment from Pearson Clinical India that has been normed for Pakistan.
Key features of WISC-IVPAK include:
- Culture appropriate items
- Norms for children in Pakistan
- Increased developmental appropriateness
- Increased emphasis on composite scores
- Increased attention to Working Memory and Processing Speed
- More user-friendly administration and scoring
- Reflects current theory and practice of cognitive assessment of children
It can be used –
- To obtain a comprehensive assessment of general cognitive functioning
- As part of an assessment to identify learning difficulties, giftedness and cognitive strengths and weaknesses
- To guide treatment planning in clinical and educational settings
- For research purposes
The adaptation and standardization of WISC-IVPAK was a result of an extended collaborative effort between Pearson Clinical and Talent Assessment (PCTA), Bangalore, India and the National Institute of Psychology (NIP), Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan.
The standardisation project was conducted at NIP under the direction of Professor Dr. Anila Kamal, Director, National Institute of Psychology. Dr. Saima Ambreen, Ex-Ph.D. Scholar, NIP and Assistant Professor in University of Balochistan, Quetta worked on the standardisation study under the direction of Prof. Dr. Anila Kamal. Psychologists, language experts, educationists and psychometricians were involved in various steps of this project. The National Language Authority, provided their expert opinion in finalising translations of various subtests.
The different stages of the project were coordinated and monitored by Dr. Michelle Joseph, Senior Manager, Product Development, PCTA on behalf of Pearson Clinical and Talent Assessment.
It was intended that the Pakistan edition would not only be culturally appropriate for children and test practitioners in Pakistan, but would also have considerable comparability with the original WISC-IV. The changes included the revision of some test items, along with translation of all original items into Urdu. The examinee directed instruction and item content (for all verbal subtests) were translated into Urdu carefully, with the aim to retain the meaning and difficulty level of the items, as close to the original content as possible. For the verbal subtests, a new vocabulary subtest was developed in Urdu.
The sample comprised children from the age group of 6 years to 16 years and 11 months, across both genders, and randomly selected from various government, semi-government, and private educational institutes. The sample data was collected from five regions of Pakistan, including the four provinces – Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa-KPK, and Balochistan, and Islamabad, the capital territory.
